Just waiting to hear back from the author but, these are the two comps I submitted for Sky Gilbert's latest collection of funny, explicit and personal poetry. To many, Sky needs no introduction. As you can see, with these comps I aimed one shot to the body and one shot to the head, much like the poetry itself.

Addendum: Luckily, the client didn't buy the silhouette cover below as I recently realized it's eerily close to this one, right down to the typeface, too. http://www.bookcoverarchive.com/book/the_error_world

I read your statement and only saw the first comp on screen, so the "one shot to the body/one shot to the head" started to, um, play itself out in my gutter of a brain. I thought you were only describing the first cover.

Love the first one, either because or despite the interpretation of your preamble. :)

Ha! The first one is my pick, too. It's, er, right on brief.

wow. 2 very different approaches. I am not sure I would be clear as an editor if the design "brief" was understood. One cover is so obviously hinting at something very funny, while the other a bit more serious.

I'll have to mull over these... for a poetry book that is...

What is it about the second comp that I'm missing?

The first one seems more appropriate for Sky's work...

Nice David. Love both of these, but I agree that first one has the visual slap across the eyes.

Pants cover is approved. Just have to figure out the overprinting for that neon acid-green.

Ooh, are you going to do a special Pantone neon? I gaze at those swatches, and can never convince anyone to use them. Sigh.

When in doubt, always bet on underpants.

The phrase "tighty-whitey" always makes me smile, but I don't know why...

well, the error world cover didn't get approved so you would have been safe...

Love the first comp you submitted.

Wow Kimberly, right down to the same typeface and everything! Shame about yours not getting through. It's lovely.
